SL Beginner's Handbook
Everything you need to know to navigate, socialize, and build in Second Life—minus the headache
By Silvina Harmony
Preface
Over my twelve years as a Second Life resident, I have compiled a wealth of information drawn from fellow veterans, forums, blogs, wikis, official Second Life websites, and many other sources I found useful. I’ve brought the most essential guides together into a single, permanent reference hub. It is offered entirely free and designed primarily to help new avatars navigate this amazing, yet wonderfully complex, virtual world.
This handbook aims to equip Second Life newcomers with every tip and trick they'll need to get off to a successful start. Throughout these pages, you'll find exhaustive, contextualized guidance on how to customize your avatar, protect your privacy, choose the right viewer, understand the Second Life economy, and master many other essential subjects.
I conceived this guide to help new residents through their first thirty days in Second Life. Because certain areas of the grid are restricted to new accounts during this initial month, it is the perfect time to focus on the fundamentals. Use this period to explore, learn the ropes, and experiment with styling your appearance. Second Life is so captivating that those first thirty days will pass before you even notice. For those already familiar with the virtual world, this is more than a starter guide — it's a comprehensive reference you'll come back to again and again.
The following chapters will give you the necessary tools to master Second Life's essential mechanics, optimize your avatar, and take care of all the little details that will help you leave your "noob" days behind—allowing you to navigate this world with confidence and skill.
Please keep in mind that this material is just a starting point. Second Life offers far more than what I can show you here; covering it completely would be a massive undertaking for me and an exhausting read for you. I highly encourage you to explore and learn on your own, as hands-on discovery is where the true value lies.
Whether you're just thinking about diving into this virtual world, have already taken the plunge but still feel a little lost, or simply find the learning curve too steep—you're in the right place.
Turn the page, and let your journey begin.
