The LDPW - Workplace Of The Moles
A closer look at the Linden Department of Public Works and its role

Who Are the Moles and What is the LDPW?
If you explore the public areas of Second Life, you will eventually run into avatars with the last name "Mole" or see content built by the LDPW. Here is what they are and what they do for the virtual world.
What is the LDPW?
The Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW) is an official program backed by Linden Lab. Just like a public works department in a real-world city manages roads and parks, the LDPW is responsible for building, improving, and maintaining the shared public infrastructure across the Second Life Mainland continents.
Who are the Moles?
The Moles are talented content creators, 3D modelers, builders, and scripters from the Second Life community who are hired by Linden Lab as independent contractors.
The Name: They use official contractor accounts that all share the last name "Mole" (for example: Ancient Mole or Grumpy Mole).
The Connection: Because they started out as regular residents, they understand the community and avatar culture incredibly well.
What is Their Main Function?
The Moles work behind the scenes to make Second Life look beautiful and function smoothly for everyone. Their main jobs include:
Building Public Infrastructure: They create and maintain the mainland highways, railroads, public oceans, waterways, and lighthouses that everyone can use.
Designing Linden Homes: The Moles are the masterminds behind the popular, ready-to-move-in "Linden Homes" communities provided to Premium members.
Creating Event Spaces: They design and build the massive, highly detailed regions used for major official grid events, such as the annual Second Life Birthday (SLB) celebrations and seasonal community festivals.
Developing Free Community Content: They create official freebies, avatar starters, and interactive items distributed by Linden Lab to help new users get started.
Spotting a Mole: If you see a "Mole" out in the world, they are usually hard at work building or testing new regions. They are notoriously friendly, but remember they are on the job—so give them a polite wave!
