How To Rez Objects

Everything you need to know about rez and build permissions

Rezzing Objects and Land Permissions

To rez an object means to bring an item out of your inventory (or the system memory) and place it directly into the virtual 3D world. Bringing an item into existence isn't possible everywhere; your avatar needs specific environmental conditions and land permissions.

1

What You Need to Rez an Object

Before you can successfully rez an object, ensure you have the following:

  • A Suitable Location: You must be standing on a piece of virtual land that explicitly allows public building, or land where you hold ownership/group rights.

  • Available Parcel Land Impact (Prims): Every piece of land has a maximum capacity for how many objects it can hold (historically called "Prim count," now measured as Land Impact). If a parcel is completely full, you cannot rez anything new, even if you own the land.

  • The Object: You need a rezable asset, such as a basic shape from the built-in Build Window (Ctrl + B), or an item stored inside your Inventory (Ctrl + I).

2

Where Can You Rez Objects?

Land in Second Life is divided into parcels, and each parcel has its own rules set by the owner. You can generally rez objects in the following locations:

A. Sandboxes

Sandboxes are dedicated public regions specifically designed for building, testing, and unpacking inventory items.

  • Public Sandboxes: Maintained by Linden Lab or large communities, these areas are completely free for anyone to use.

  • The Catch: They feature automatic clearing scripts. Any object you rez in a sandbox will be automatically deleted and returned to your inventory after a set time limit (typically every 4 to 12 hours).

B. Your Own Land

If you rent or own land (a parcel on a mainland continent or a private island estate), you have total control over it. You can rez objects freely up to the land's maximum Land Impact limit.

C. Group Land

Many communities, clubs, and residential areas allow members of their specific In-World Group to build. If you join the land's associated group and activate that group tag, the system will grant you rezzing privileges on that property.

D. Public Land with "Build" Enabled

Some landowners leave their parcel settings wide open, allowing any passing resident to rez objects temporarily.

3

What Kind of Permissions Do You Need?

The Second Life simulator calculates your rezzing rights based on the About Land settings of the parcel you are standing on. There are three primary permission states you will encounter: Everyone, Group, and Owner only.

The About Land window in Firestorm Viewer showing the land Options tab. In this example, Build permissions are set to Group.

How to Check Your Permissions Instantly

Look at the Top Menu Bar of your viewer (near the region name and current virtual time).

  • If you see a small icon of a box with a red diagonal line through it 🚫, rezzing is strictly disabled for you on that spot.

  • If there is no icon, you are free to build.

The Specific Parcel Settings Table

Land Setup
Required Permissions
How it Works

Public Build Enabled

None

The owner checked "Everyone: Build" in the land settings. Anyone can drop items here. Often found in sandboxes.

Group Build Enabled

Group Membership + Active Tag

The owner checked "Group: Build". You must join the group and actively wear the group title/tag to rez items.

Private Land

Ownership or Explicit Rights

Only the deeded owner or designated estate managers can rez objects. Visitors are completely blocked.

What's next? Now that you know how to rez objects, in the next chapter we'll delve deep into the basics to build in SL.
