Creating Your Account & Choosing Your First Avatar
Second Life is a free-to-play online virtual world where you can explore, socialize, create, and even run a business — all through a customizable digital identity called an avatar. Before any of that, you need an account and a first look. This chapter walks you through both.
What Is Second Life, in a Nutshell?
Unlike a traditional video game, Second Life has no storyline, no quests, and no finish line. It's a persistent online world — running 24/7 since 2003 — where everything you see has been built by its residents. Think of it as a creative social platform in 3D. Whether you're here to make friends, attend virtual concerts, build architecture, or run a fashion brand, it all starts the same way: with an account.

Sign Up on the Second Life Website
Go to secondlife.com and click SIGN UP.
Fill in the registration form:
Username — your permanent name in the virtual world. This is public, any resident can see it, so choose something you're comfortable with. It can be changed after registration, but a fee applies, so keep that in mind.
Password — make it strong and unique.
Email Address — used for account verification and important notices.
Security Question — provide an answer to the security question shown.
Check the checkbox if you want to receive news and special offers; otherwise, leave it blank.
Consent Linden Lab's Terms of Service, Second Life Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy.
Check the "I'm not a robot" checkbox and click the "Create account" button.
Check your inbox and click the verification link to activate your account.
Tip: Avoid using your real name or personal information as your username. Many residents choose a creative name that reflects their in-world personality.
Download and Install the Viewer
Second Life doesn't run in a browser — it uses a dedicated desktop application called the Viewer.
After registering, you'll be prompted to download the official Second Life Viewer, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Install it like any standard application.
Open the Viewer and log in with your username and password.
About third-party viewers: Many experienced residents prefer alternative Viewers like Firestorm, Alchemy, or Singularity, among many others, which offer additional features and interface options. If you're just starting out, the official Viewer is the best place to begin — you can always switch later once you know what you're looking for.
Enter Second Life
The first time you log in, you'll be placed in one of Second Life's welcome or learning areas — dedicated beginner zones run by Linden Lab (the company behind Second Life) and volunteer community members.
Here you'll find:
Interactive tutorials covering movement, camera controls, and the interface.
Volunteer Mentors identifiable by their Helper tags, ready to answer questions in real time.
Teleport boards to start exploring the broader grid when you feel ready.
There's no pressure to rush. Welcome areas are low-stakes spaces designed exactly for getting comfortable before venturing further.
Choose your avatar
Once you are "inworld", you can pick a starter avatar — your initial appearance in the virtual world. This is purely cosmetic and entirely temporary; you can change every single aspect of your look at any point, often for free.
The Avatar Welcome Pack

The Second Life Avatar Welcome Pack was officially introduced and made globally available to all residents on April 24, 2025. The starter wardrobe was released via the official Second Life Community Blog to replace the older, less-popular "Senra" avatar line with improved, high-quality meshes and accessories. Instead of traditional single-character selections, you choose from complete, pre-assembled styles across different themes.
The pack is available to both new and veteran players in the Library section of your in-game Inventory. Second Life features the Avatar Welcome Pack for new account creations. This pack is a grid of pre-styled, mesh-based starter avatars designed in collaboration with top creators. Heads from LeLutka, bodies from Legacy, skins from VELOUR and LeLAPEAU. Clothing, hair and accessories were provided by Addams, ARCBACK, Cold Ash, DOUX, Gabriel, Heol, Mellow Elie, NOMERCY, PARÉ, Phedora, Stealthic, and Wings. Rounding out the pack is a set of animations from OMY.
Female Starter Avatars
Vibe A / B (Casual & Urban): Outfitted with apparel by Addams and hair by Doux.
Vibe C (Chic): Features a dressier look with high-end designer pieces by Mellow Elie.
Vibe D (Fantasy/Fantasy Roleplay): Utilizes fantasy textures and stylized hair pieces.
Male Starter Avatars
Vibe A (Streetwear): Relaxed modern fits, often styled by Cold Ash.
Vibe B / C (Formal & Casual): Includes tailored pieces or jackets by brands like Gabriel and Arcback.
Vibe D (Active/Fantasy): Offers optimized fantasy content with low visual lag for roleplay regions.
How to Choose and Access Them
At Sign Up: New users are prompted to pick an initial style directly on the Second Life web-based join page.
Post Registration: Once logged in (via the official viewer or third-party viewers like Firestorm), the Avatar Welcome Pack interface appears automatically.
To access the Avatar Interface: Click the button (an icon representing a male and a female figure) on the left side of your screen.
There you'll see a grid of six pre-styled avatars — three female and three male.
Click on any one of them to instantly wear the avatar of your choice.
In-World Access: If you want to change your starter look later, navigate to the suitcase icon to open your Inventory > Library > Avatar Welcome Pack.
Don't overthink it. Your starter avatar is just a placeholder. Second Life has one of the most extensive avatar customization ecosystems of any virtual world — from free community resources to a thriving paid marketplace. Most residents completely reinvent their appearance within their first week.

A Note on Cost
Creating an account and exploring Second Life is completely free. A paid Plus, Premium, or Premium Pro membership (which we'll discuss ahead) exists and unlocks certain perks (like owning land and a weekly Linden Dollar stipend), but it's entirely optional — especially when you're just starting out. You can enjoy a huge amount of Second Life without spending a cent.

What's Next? With your account set up and your avatar chosen, it's time to learn how to move through the world. The next chapter covers navigation — walking, running, flying, using the camera, and teleporting across the grid.
