Shopping Tips

Getting your own things in Second Life doesn't always mean spending Linden Dollars

Where to Find Clothing and Accessories

The Second Life Marketplace

The Marketplace is Second Life's official online shop. You can browse and purchase items from your web browser, and they're delivered directly to your in-world inventory.

  • Search by category, price, or keyword.

  • Filter by Price: Free to find no-cost items — there are thousands.

  • Check Reviews and Creator Ratings before buying paid items.

  • Look for Demo versions of expensive items to try before purchasing.

In-World Stores

Many designers operate physical stores on the Second Life grid, often far more atmospheric and curated than their Marketplace listings. Visiting in-world stores is a great way to discover creators and explore what's possible.

Popular shopping destinations include:

  • The Arcade (gacha / event-style)

  • Collabor88 (monthly discount event)

  • FaMESHed (mesh fashion event)

  • The Epiphany (seasonal event)

  • Uber (monthly creator event)

Freebies and Group Gifts

Many creators offer free group gifts — high-quality items given away to group members as a thank-you or promotion. Joining a store's in-world group often unlocks a folder of freebies immediately.

There are many groups like ShopaholicSL, SL frees & offers, ~ Fitmesh Fanatics ~, and many more that offers freebies, dollarbies and very cheap high-quality items.

"Dollarbies" in Second Life (SL) are items, such as clothing, accessories, or avatar enhancements, sold for a nominal price of 1 Linden Dollar ($L1). These heavily discounted or free items are popular for customizing avatars on a budget, often found on the Second Life Marketplace or through specialized, community-driven groups.

Key Aspects of Dollarbies:

  • Cost: Almost exclusively priced at $L1.

  • Variety: Includes clothing, mesh items, skins, and accessories.

Sources:

  • Marketplace: Search the Second Life Marketplace for "dollarbie".

  • Blogs: Sites like FabFree highlight new, affordable items.

  • Types of Items: Ranging from vintage-inspired clothing to mesh leggings and cosmetics.

They provide an accessible way for users to discover new designers and update their look without spending much.

Other great sources of free items:

  • Palomma Plaza — a long-running in-world freebie hub with quality clothing and accessories.

  • Freebie Galaxy — features a 15-floor complex packed with over 3,000 completely free items.

  • Marketplace Free Items — filter by L$0 (zero Linden Dollars) for instant free downloads.

What's Next? Your avatar is looking great — now that you had a wonderful start, it is time to understand a very important aspect that plays a fundamental role in the modernization, refinement and sophistication of the world of Second Life and its residents: the infinite Mesh Universe that changed everything.
