About The Economy

A thorough look at one of the virtual world's most defining aspects

How Second Life Economy Works

Second Life features one of the most successful and long-standing virtual economies in the world. Unlike most video game economies, the currency in Second Life has real-world value, can be officially exchanged for real money, and supports thousands of real-world businesses, creators, and service providers.

What is the Linden Dollar (L$)?

The Linden Dollar (L$) is the official virtual currency used inside Second Life.

  • Stable Value: While its value experiences minor fluctuations based on supply and demand, it stays highly stable.

  • Exchange Rate: The exchange rate generally floats around L$240 to L$270 per US$1. (For example: L$1,000 is roughly equivalent to $4.00 USD).

  • Utility: You use L$ to buy everything inside the virtual world, from avatar bodies and clothing to land rentals, animations, and scripted tools.

Types of Financial Transactions

Money changes hands in Second Life through several distinct transaction types:

  • Direct Avatar-to-Avatar Payments: You can pay any resident directly for services (like tipping a DJ, paying a real estate broker, or hiring a photographer).

  • Object Purchases: Right-clicking an in-world object (like a vendor dress or a box of furniture) and selecting "Buy."

  • System Fees: Occasional costs charged by Linden Lab, such as listing items on the Marketplace, uploading textures/sounds (L$10), or creating a Group (L$100).

  • Group Dividends/Liabilities: Groups can be set up so that earnings (like club tips) or expenses (like group land fees) are automatically split among members.

How Shopping Works

There are two main ways to buy items in Second Life:

In-World Shopping

You visit virtual shopping malls, designer boutiques, or event regions. You browse the 3D displays, right-click the vendors, and purchase the items. They are instantly delivered directly to your avatar's inventory.

The Second Life Marketplace

This is the official web-based e-commerce platform (similar to Amazon but for virtual goods). You log into the Marketplace website using your Second Life account, browse categories, add items to your cart, and check out. The platform automatically deducts L$ from your in-world balance and delivers the items to your avatar's Received Items folder in real-time.

How to Get (Buy) Linden Dollars

If you need L$ to spend, you can acquire them in two primary ways:

  • The LindeX Exchange: This is the official currency exchange built directly into the Second Life website and viewer dashboard. You can execute a Market Buy (instant purchase at the best current rate) or a Limit Buy (setting a specific target rate and waiting for the market to hit it).

  • Earning Them In-World: You can get a virtual job (host, dancer, model), build and sell 3D content, or provide services to other residents to earn L$ directly.

5

Converting L$ to Real Money & Withdrawing

If you earn L$ and want to cash out into real-world fiat currency, the process requires two steps: selling the L$ into USD, and then withdrawing those funds via a Process Credit request.

Step 1: Selling L$ on the LindeX

  1. Log into your account dashboard on the Second Life website.

  2. Navigate to Linden Exchange > Sell L$.

  3. Specify how many Lindens you want to sell.

  4. Once the transaction processes, the Lindens vanish, and the corresponding US Dollar (USD) balance will appear in your account wallet.

Step 2: Withdrawing the Money (Process Credit)

  1. Go to your account dashboard and select Process Credit.

  2. Choose your payout provider:

    • PayPal

    • MassPay

    • Skrill (Note: Only available if you linked a Skrill account prior to early 2025).

  3. Enter the amount of USD you want to transfer out and submit the request. Payouts typically take a few business days to clear depending on account history and the provider.

6

How to Use the Tilia Account

Tilia (operated by Thunes) is the backend financial platform that legalizes and secures these real-money interactions.

You don't need to visit a separate website to use Tilia; it is fully integrated right into your Second Life account dashboard. Here is how it works:

  • The Agreement: The very first time you attempt to buy L$, buy a piece of mainland, or hold a USD balance, a pop-up prompt will ask you to read and accept the Tilia Terms of Service.

  • Identity Verification (KYC): If you begin regularly selling L$ or processing credits (withdrawing real money), Tilia will trigger a mandatory compliance check. You will be prompted on the Second Life website to securely upload your government-issued ID and tax details.

  • Wallet Monitoring: You can view your real-money financial history, Tilia invoices, and current USD holdings under the Account tab of your Second Life web dashboard at any time.

7

Payment Info

In Second Life, to operate with real money, you need to set "Payment Info", meaning that you have saved a billing method (like a credit card or PayPal account) to your Linden Lab account.

Profile Badges

Your account status appears on your avatar profile as one of the following:

  • Payment Info on File: You entered your billing details on the Second Life website, but haven't actually spent any real-world money yet.

  • Payment Info Used: You have successfully used your saved payment method to buy Linden Dollars (L$) or a premium membership.

  • No Payment Info on File: No credit card nor other payment method is linked to your account.

Why It Matters

Having payment information linked and used is important for several reasons:

  • Accessing Premium Areas: Many adult-rated regions, events, or shops restrict entry to avatars that have verifiable payment information.

  • Security: It proves you are a verified user and helps the community distinguish your main account from "alt" or throwaway accounts.

  • Withdrawing Money: If you make a profit in-game and want to cash out your Linden Dollars to real-world currency, your billing information must be verified with Tilia (Linden Lab's billing partner).

You can add or update your billing details on the Second Life Billing Information dashboard.

What's next? In the next chapter we'll explain how Tilia works and how it manages your real USD account.
